Kanji time

After discussing with a few pals on the train tonight, I decided to just sit here and muse about this topic. The topic is about the use of Kanji in names.

Correct me if I am wrong (which I mostly likely am), the parents decide what kanji is used for their names. I am sure there are many ways on picking a name, but I wonder if current accomplishments mean anything. If so, I decided to give it a whirl and make my name in kanji.

Note before you try this: Katakana is the method that is generally accepted in name writing for gaikokujin. I still plan on using my katakana name for papers, such as school assignments and also business cards (meishi). However, here is what I got after some digging and playing with the characters.

座嘉理 (sitting, creative, reason)

I didn't want to decide on a last name, but some suggestions came up as Wave/Supreme for Ha and Den came out as honorable/electric. If I have to pick something, it would be Supreme Honorable (覇殿) due to my family's lineage of service to the United States government, either civil or military.

So, am I going to get this inked on my body just like other random white people do? Hell no son, I am not a big fan of tattoos. I don't like the thought of having ink that is there for the rest of my life and it will look like mess when I get older. Plus, you have to get one that you will remember for the rest of your life. Sooner or later, all of my knowledge about the Japanese language will be lost in the memory hole. I hope it doesn't happen, but there is always that chance. Anyways, I welcome your corrections and/or suggestions.
